PARCA Newsletter
|
PARCA held its annual meeting recently during SIIM 2009 in Charlotte, NC. Conference attendance was down in general over previous years, and the same was true for our meeting.
A big thank you goes out to PARCA Sponsors, OTech, Inc and PACSGear who donated some great door prizes for our members! Board Vice President Jamie Osland and Consultants Ed Smith and Herman Oosterwijk were on-hand to talk to members, and there was lively conversation covering many topics including re-certification requirements, exam content review and CE credits. A brief update on each topic follows.
Recertification
PARCA’s board and consultants are currently working on the recertification procedures. Preliminary discussions have agreed that PARCA Certifications will be valid for 4 years, after which recertification will be required by retaking the exam. The final details haven’t been finalized, but expect more details prior to the January 2010 implementation date.
Exam Review
If questions are raised by a member about a question’s integrity or accuracy, it is reviewed and corrected as necessary. A board subcommittee has recently been formed to start a complete review of each exam. If you would like to be involved in this process, and hold a CPIA and CPSA or CPSM Certification, please contact service@pacsadmin.org for more details.

It was announced that the number of attempts per approval code has been reduced from three to two. A member can take an exam twice within 6 months. If they fail the exam the second time, they will need to purchase a new approval code to try again. They may only take the exam a maximum of 3 times within 12 months.
Continuing Education Credits
PARCA is actively looking into obtaining CE’s for our exams with various US and International-based organizations and we hope to have more updates on this soon.
The Future

A recent poll by OTech, Inc asked when readers believe that PACS SA certification will become mandatory. An overwhelming 50% thought this could be within 3 years!
The Texas Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 1193, requiring certification for all personnel calibrating, repairing, or maintaining certain medical devices – including PACS. The bill was referred to The House Public Health Committee but did not receive a hearing in time for end of session deadlines.
PARCA membership and certification levels continue to climb steadily. Total world-wide membership since 2005 is over 1,000, and to date over 400 PARCA Certifications have been issued.
