PARCA is in the process of establishing a recertification procedure to go into effect January 2010. We would like to give our members an opportunity to look at the proposal for recertification and offer any feedback. Recertification Proposal
Background
Most professional certifications in the medical field require maintaining proficiency and keeping up with advances in technology by documenting participation in continuing education. Most, including ABII, also require re-certification. Recognized institutions issue credits and candidates have to show a certain number of credits. One hour of training/education typically equals one credit. Sometimes, a distinction is made between formal training credits and those obtained through self-study.
Proposal
PARCA has always maintained that there would be a re-certification requirement after five years. Therefore, some members who earned certification before 2005 are technically no longer certified. The details of our re-certification process were never established. Therefore, it is prudent to develop a re-certification policy and process.
We propose to follow the ABII guidelines literally, which will support our efforts to reconcile the two certification processes. This requires people to collect 12 credits per year and take another exam after 5 years. These 12 credits are equivalent to the ARRT requirement for keeping their RT license, so for those doing that, there would be no additional education requirement so long as these credits are on informatics topics.
Because we have not strongly advertised the re-certification requirement previously, we will phase in re-certification with a year catch-up period, i.e. the first exam would be needed by January 2011 with the 12 continuing education credits per year starting to be collected in January 2010.
Since people need to be members to update their credits, we can give members a discount for recertification.
